FAQ’s on Antifingerprint

Do AF coatings work on polished/unstructured surfaces?
Only if the normally recommended thickness of the coating of 0.5µm is changed to >0.5µm or <0.5µm. However, note that coating thicknesses <0.5µm result in a loss of resistance to chemicals and friction. If thickness is increased to >5µm application and hardening must be in dust-free rooms (refer to "Optics and haptics").

Do you supply AF coatings that are RT hardening?
Not yet.
RT hardening AF coating is still under development.

Do surface optics or haptics change due to the coating?
Haptics are unaffected by coatings of 0.5µm.
Surfaces hardly change optically. AF coating effects are a minor darkening of the surface to adjust the surface refraction index to that of finger grease. This change is hardly discernible and even makes the surface appear more uniform. If coating thickness is increased to >0.5µm then optical and haptical changes cannot be excluded.

What preliminary cleaning is needed before coat application?
In principle the surface must be dry and free of dust and grease.
We recommend the following five points be observed for the surface.
1. Use an alkaline cleaner.
2. Rinse with mains water or completely salt-free water.
3. Use an acidic cleaner.
4. Rinse with mains water and completely salt-free water.
Hydrophile coverage of the surface with fully desalted water indicates the surface is adequately cleaned. If the surface is to be hydrophobe then steps 1 to 3 need to be repeated. Please use only cleaners that contain no substances speeding or aiding drying as these leave a water resistant film.
5. Dry with oil-free compressed air

How's application done?
By spraying. Standard compressed air or airless spray guns can be used. Make sure compressed air is oil-free. Some materials are suitable for electrostatic application (watch the flammability temperature). We'd be happy to advise you on integrating the application engineering in your series manufacturing equipment.

How's the AF material dried / hardened?
At temperatures of about 150-180°C depending on substance, e.g. in a convection oven.

Are the materials solvent- or water-based?
We supply both variants for most purposes.

Do ADF coatings work on glass, plastic and painted surfaces?
No.
